Heads up exporters! Application dates have finally been confirmed for round 4 of the Export Market Development Grant (EMDG) program.
Round 4 is set to open for applications in November 2024. This round brings with it updated grant guidelines and eligibility criteria, ensuring the program continues to support the ever-evolving needs of Australian SMEs.
Here's what you need to know about EMDG application dates:
- Representative bodies: Applications open at 10am AEDT on 6 November 2024.
- Tier 1 – Ready to export: Applications open at 10am AEDT on 12 November 2024.
- Tier 2 – Exporting within existing markets: Applications open at 10am AEDT on 12 November 2024.
- Tier 3 – Exporting to new key markets: Applications open at 10am AEDT on 12 November 2024.

How Much is the EMDG Program Worth?
For Round 4, up to $104.5 million will be available in FY25-26 and up to $104.5 million in FY26-27 for grant allocations. The expected EMDG grant amounts per year are:
- Tier 1: Up to $30,000 per financial year
- Tier 2: Up to $50,000 per financial year
- Tier 3: Up to $80,000 per financial year
Approximately 1,900 grants will be offered in Round Four across all tiers and applications will close once the allocated funding for each tier is fully distributed.
When Are EMDG Payments Made and is My Business Eligible for the EMDG Program?
Successful applicants receive grant agreements for up to two financial years, covering planned expenditure from 2025–26 to 2026–27. And get set for some big changes to the EMDG eligibility criteria:
Minimum Turnover Requirements:
- Tier 1: More than $100,000 per year
- Tier 2: More than $500,000 per year
- Tier 3: More than $1 million per year
More EMDG Eligibility Requirements:
- SMEs need to show they can spend at least $20,000 annually on marketing and promotional activities from their own pockets.
- Your business must have been operating for at least two years with the same ABN.
- Tier 1 applicants must prove their export readiness by completing approved training or passing the Export Readiness Test.
- Tier 3 grants now target specific key markets, pushing experienced exporters to dive into new opportunities and diversify.
